SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The renovation of the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is taking longer than expected, officials announced Thursday.
In a news release, the church said the project is now expected to be finished in 2026 rather than 2025.
Officials said work on the temple – which was built in 1893 – is moving forward “at a deliberate and measured pace. However, when working with historic structures such as this pioneer-era temple, unexpected challenges are inevitable.”
The church did not specify which challenges it was facing.
“Construction milestones will continue to be shared periodically, with a final completion date and temple open house schedule to be determined and shared as soon as feasible,” the news release stated.
The temple, which sits in the center of downtown Salt Lake City, was closed at the end of December 2019 for a years-long renovation project to strengthen it against an earthquake by installing a base isolation system.
It was originally set to stay closed until 2024, but that date has been pushed back several times.
Regarding the base isolation system, church officials said Thursday that concrete has been poured for the first base isolator, and its installation is expected sometime in April.
Besides the temple renovation, other construction work on Temple Square continues. The church noted the Assembly Hall, located southwest of the temple, and surrounding facilities will be closed later this year as crews turn their focus to that part of the grounds.
