Dominick Reyes has finally decided to shift camps and move to Glover Teixeira’s gym in Connecticut. The gym also houses Alex Pereira camps in the USA.
Reyes dropped from favour very quickly as he was at a point considered to be the uncrowned king at lightweight and not soon after fell into becoming a forgotten Contender. Now after a long lay-off where he reevaluated his career path and choices, the Light Heavyweight has finally decided to take up his spot in a real MMA Gym.
Reyes was criticized heavily in the past for keeping his brothers as his head trainers, often coming with the accusation that they were the reason he plateaued so hard once he reached the top. Hence this love to Teixeira’s gym is a welcome one.
Dominick Reyes looking to reignite Championship aspirations by training with former divisional champ Glover Teixeira
Reyes had the high point of his career when, on the strength of an undefeated 12-0 run he gained a title shot against long-reigning champion, Jon Jones. While many felt that being in the same cage as the greatest fighter to ever do it would be the highlight of his career, they were proven wrong. Reyes took the fight to Jones early on and arguably won the first two rounds with him possibly having secured the fight by the third in the eyes of many.
However, the Cinderella story didn’t come through, and Jon was able to retain his control over the final 2 rounds which in the eyes of the judges was enough to give him the nod. However, fans to this day argue that Reyes had every valid statistic in his favor to have him crowned the new champion that night.
Jones would shortly after the fight take a sabbatical from the sport while Reyes would go on to face Jan Blachowicz for the vacant title. Everyone welcomed Reyes throughout the fight week like he were the uncrowned champ, they were in for a rude awakening when the “Legendary Polish Power” struck again and finished him in 2 rounds.
Following this, he was booked against fast-rising contender Jiri Prochazka where he was knocked out again, in one of the decade’s most brutal finishes. Now he wishes to bounce back from all of that with his latest booking against Ryan Spann.
And what a team he has around to accomplish that. With Glover acting as his coach alongside head coach Fernley Feliz, Reyes has all the tools and knowledge that could be wanted in a former champion himself. Add that to a fresh striker like Alex Pereira being one of your training partners and the UFC may just have “The Devastator” back on its hands.
